I met my Mother today. The first time I had seen her for at least 9 months and she was looking better than I expected, but in a wheel chair - the osteoporosis has got to her. She was very much 'up' though which gave me a lift.
We met at the Sainsbury's Cafe in Weston-super-Mare, my home town. Its a good job the arrangement was not done through the mail, we would probably have missed each other by at least five days.
Les Skeates was born in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England to working parents in Dec '49. He was educated at Weston Grammar School and when 15 years old, the Royal Army Medical Corps Apprentices College.
Following 7 years as a soldier, the next 12 were spent in various jobs, interespersed with periods of self-study and travel. These were also the years his political involvement matured. In 1984 he was invited to work for the Communist Party of Great Britain and fulfilled a series of roles including London Organiser and Eastern District Secretary.
In 1990 he successfully applied to lead the communists of Wales and took up the position of Welsh Secretary of the CPGB with a remit to change the Party.
Having succeeded in changing the Welsh CP to Democratic Left Wales and making himself redundant, he tried to establish himself as a photojournalist. Just over 2 years ago he was diagnosed with relapsing/remitting Multiple Sclerosis.
Les now lives in Totnes, the 'Dippy Hippy' capital of England.
