This blog is moving. I registered the domain name outsidethegates.com when first setting up this blog and have transfered all of the postings there. It's still a 'work in progress' so please excuse the uncompleted nature of the site.
The first posting to the site is a poem - Choice - which we all have to make very quickly.
Les Skeates was born in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England to working parents in Dec '49. He was educated at Weston Grammar School and when 15 years old, the Royal Army Medical Corps Apprentices College.
Following 7 years as a soldier, the next 12 were spent in various jobs, interespersed with periods of self-study and travel. These were also the years his political involvement matured. In 1984 he was invited to work for the Communist Party of Great Britain and fulfilled a series of roles including London Organiser and Eastern District Secretary.
In 1990 he successfully applied to lead the communists of Wales and took up the position of Welsh Secretary of the CPGB with a remit to change the Party.
Having succeeded in changing the Welsh CP to Democratic Left Wales and making himself redundant, he tried to establish himself as a photojournalist. Just over 2 years ago he was diagnosed with relapsing/remitting Multiple Sclerosis.
Les now lives in Totnes, the 'Dippy Hippy' capital of England.
